Why Use Calendula?

Calendula (also known as pot marigold) is a vibrant, antioxidant-rich golden orange flower in the daisy family. The dried petals of the calendula flower are often used in teas, tinctures, creams, and oil to soothe and aid in recovery from burns, bruises, and cuts. Calendula may help ease dermatitis or skin inflammation.

Why is Calendula Good for Skin?

Often, plants and foods of a golden color support natural radiance of the skin! Calendula, like saffron, turmeric, ghee, lemons, papaya, pineapple, honey and golden beets, can be beneficial for promoting your natural glow. This may be related to the high concentration of antioxidants like vitamin c and beta carotene.

CALENDULA CREAM BENEFITS

Because of these radiance-promoting qualities, you’ll often find calendula is a key ingredient in natural skin care and wound balms. It’s so gentle that many natural diaper rash creams and baby-safe salves also feature this golden flower. In these contexts, calendula pairs well with other mild, soothing herbs like chamomile and st. John's wort.

The benefit of enjoying calendula in the form of a cream is that it is light to absorb and cool to the touch, which can provide an instant sensation of soothing to the skin. If you find yourself drawn to a calendula salve, it may be a little more potent because it stays on the skin longer.

A calendula-infused oil has a similar effect to a calendula-infused salve and may even have the potential to penetrate more deeply, depending on the oil that it’s infused into. In Ayurveda, oil is considered to be a vehicle to help deliver the medicine of herbs more deeply into the tissues. Sesame oil, ghee and castor oil are especially potent in this regard.

Because all herbs work synergistically, if you are taking the time to infuse a calendula oil, you might explore the possibility of adding a couple other herbs into the infusion to enhance the overall healing properties of the final product. Consider herbs like chamomile, lavender, rose or st. john’s wort.

½ Cup Organic Rose Petals (optional)

8 Drops Lavender Essential Oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 250 degrees F.

  2. In an oven-safe pot or bowl, mix sesame oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, calendula, and rose well.

  3. Place the pot in the oven.

  4. Cook for two days/8 hrs each day, or three days/5 hrs each day (leave the pot in the oven overnight when it’s turned off).

  5. Stir occasionally to prevent herbs from burning.

  6. On the last day, slightly cool the oil, then strain through a mesh sieve.

  7. Add lavender essential oil.

  8. Bottle and label. Store in a cool, dark place.

  9. This beautiful infusion should be shelf stable for about one year.

Why Drink Calendula Tea?

In folk herbalism, calendula is favored as a plant that may help reduce or relieve internal spasms of the smooth muscle tissue (which could be associated with cramps or indigestion). This radiant flower is also believed to support an optimal inflammatory response — not to mention its powerful antioxidant properties!

CALENDULA TEA BENEFITS

With all of its potent and vibrant compounds, calendula brings a slew of potential health-promoting benefits to those who ingest it in the form of herbal tea.

Ayurveda often recommends drinking herbs in the form of warm tea so that the compounds in the herbs are more easily absorbed into the bloodstream and accepted by the tissues for deep nourishment.

Additionally, the heat of the warm beverage also promotes healthy digestion by enkindling your digestive fire. If you’re drinking calendula tea to soothe digestive cramps, the warmth will further aid your mission.
